Grades are in. I am officially (more or less) on break. Going to see a movie this afternoon to celebrate.

An MFA *is* a Terminal Degree
Just another academic blog, this one by a guy who recently joined the tenure track after struggling to prove to various hiring committes that a Master of Fine Arts is, in fact, a terminal degree. I finally got hired in a department where I didn't have to prove it because, wonder of wonders, they already knew this. Yay. I am happy -- most of the time. What will/did you see?
I went to see Lord of War at the discount theater. I really liked it. I heard it described once as Goodfellas with arms dealers instead of gangsters. And it's an accurate description. Really good script, good performance by Nic Cage.
I've heard good things about it from one of my students, but probably won't get around to seeing it. I wish I could bring myself to watch Nic Cage movies, but he lost me somewhere around the remake of Wings of Desire.
Some of his more 'popular' big budget films stink (some are okay). This really isn't one of those movies. And since it was made by Andrew Niccol (of Gattaca and The Truman Show fame), I was required by own love of his work to see it.
